Safe Net Zero - April Round Up

HSE's Safe Net Zero solutions integrate health and safety into the development and deployment of the new and novel technologies underpinning the UK's decarbonisation activities.

Here's a round up of our latest news.

The Appliance of Science

This week HSE launched its Annual Science Review which showcases the important science that HSE has conducted over the past year.

As an evidence-based regulator, science underpins everything we do: it informs our inspections, our investigations, our policies and our free information and guidance.

It also informs our commercial solutions. When we work with customers to resolve their health and safety challenges, they benefit from the same knowledge, experience and regulatory insight that's been built up from being part of Great Britain's workplace health and safety regulator for the last 45 years.

This unique combination makes us unrivalled in our ability to support the safe deployment of net zero energy technologies.

Take a look at this year's review to see how we apply our science.

Enabling a Safe Net Zero

HSE's science is playing a vital role in enabling the new energy vectors being developed and deployed to support the UK's pioneering legislation to decarbonise and become 'net zero' by 2050, with 78% of the reductions required by 2035.

For these new energy technologies to be accepted, they must be safe. This year's Annual Science Review showcases just two of the many projects HSE scientists are involved in which are enabling the safe deployment of new energy technologies.

Read about how our pre-normative research is yielding valuable data about the safe handling of liquid hydrogen to inform the potential accident prevention and mitigation measures required to enable industry to adopt the technology with more confidence.

Read also about the role we're playing in assessing the feasibility of transporting hydrogen, hydrogen-natural gas blends, or carbon dioxide in sections of the UK's gas transmission system.

Still time to tune in

Last month HSE Training and Events hosted 'Safe Net Zero 2021 – Hydrogen' which brought together regulators, government, industry and academia to showcase and discuss the incredible amount of work underway to safely evaluate, produce, distribute and use hydrogen as a potential low carbon energy vector.

The 3-day event was a huge success bringing together over 5,000 delegates from 70 countries to hear from many of the industry's most influential speakers.

If you missed it, don't worry – the full event is available now on catch-up.

Please visit the event website here to register and access our recorded content.
