Minnesota News and Outreach

Vaccine Outreach Campaign

As a part of the new statewide "Roll Up Your Sleeves, Minnesota" campaign, Governor Walz launched an outreach effort focused on connecting workers in critical industries to the resources they need to get vaccinated. In the coming weeks, workers in priority frontline sectors will be vaccinated at community vaccination sites.

The campaign kicks off its first week with workers in the food service industry. The impacts of COVID-19 have been devastating for restaurants, bars, and other food service employers across Minnesota. They met the challenge by completely re-imagining their operations to keep Minnesotans safe and protect their workforces.

To drive food service workers to Sign Up for the Vaccine Connector and get vaccinated, the state has partnered with industry leaders, employers, and influential restaurateurs and chefs across Minnesota – including Chef Andrew Zimmern.

New Community Vaccination Sites

Minnesota State Fairgrounds

Governor Walz and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that Minnesota will receive a federal Community Vaccination Clinic. The site will be located at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and receive 168,000 doses over eight weeks. The site will administer a combination of Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson doses, which will result in over 100,000 total people being vaccinated during the eight-week period. The doses administered at the Fairgrounds will be in addition to Minnesota's regular statewide vaccine allocations.

Vaccinations will begin at the Fairgrounds on April 14 and serve Minnesotans living in the highest Social Vulnerability Index zip codes near the Fairgrounds. Appointments will be available to Minnesotans 16 years of age and older who live in the following zip codes in Ramsey and Hennepin County: 55454, 55103, 55130, 55411, 55404, 55117, 55428, 55119, 55107, 55106, 55407, 55430, 55412, 55102, 55429, 55421, 55104, 55114, 55432, 55118, 55420, 55413, 55402, 55109, 55406, 55423, 55415, 55405, 55408, 55425, 55112, 55111, 55403, 55101, 55344, 55435, 55113, 55458.

Minnesotans living in the zip codes listed above can Sign Up for the Vaccine Connector to be selected for an appointment.

Oakdale

The State of Minnesota's COVID-19 Community Vaccination Program is expanding further this week with a new permanent vaccination site at Inwood Oaks in Oakdale.

The Pfizer vaccine will be administered at Inwood Oaks this week. The large-scale Oakdale site is the eighth permanent community vaccination site in Minnesota, joining Minneapolis, Duluth, Rochester, Bloomington, Saint Paul, St. Cloud, and Mankato.

U.S. Bank Stadium

Today, Governor Walz announced the State of Minnesota is hosting a temporary community vaccination event at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis to replace the TCO Performance Center (TCO) event, after the TCO venue suffered weather-related damage.

Appointments scheduled for April 7 at TCO were postponed and impacted patients will be contacted directly to reschedule their appointments as soon as possible. Appointments after Wednesday originally scheduled at TCO Performance Center remain scheduled and will now be administered at the U.S. Bank Stadium.

Minnesotans who Sign Up for the Vaccine Connector may be randomly selected for an appointment at a Community Vaccination Program location.

What's New

Different COVID-19 Vaccines

Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is one of the most important steps you can take to protect yourself and your community. There are three COVID-19 vaccines authorized for use under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA): Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson. All the COVID-19 vaccines are very good at protecting you from COVID-19.

Minnesota is distributing all three COVID-19 vaccines widely to all vaccine providers: health systems, community vaccination sites, local public health, pharmacies, etc. Currently, most vaccination sites and health care providers in Minnesota only have one COVID-19 vaccine product, so people will probably not have a choice of which vaccine they get.

There are not recommendations for certain populations (e.g., older people or people with immune disorders, etc.) to get one vaccine over the other. No community or group is being targeted with one particular COVID-19 vaccine. We encourage you to get vaccinated with the vaccine offered to you. You can refuse to get vaccinated, but another vaccine appointment cannot be guaranteed right now while vaccine supply remains low.

Observe Ramadan Safer

This year, Ramadan may begin on April 13 and end on May 13. It is followed by the Eid al-Fitr celebration. The month of Ramadan in the Islamic calendar is a time of prayer, reflection, and fasting. It is marked by social and religious gatherings, during which Muslim families and friends unite to break their fast together. Many Muslims increase their attendance at mosques during the month and congregate for longer prayers, especially at night.

Muslim faith leaders and Imams across Minnesota collaborated with the Minnesota Department of Health to discuss the requirements all Minnesotans must follow at this time and developed additional recommendations for observing Ramadan safely this year. We all play a role in reducing the spread of COVID-19.
