Embargo lifts at 09.00 CET/08.00 GMT on 4 November 2026. WHO experts are available for interviews. About the report: Climate change is one of the defining health challenges of the 21st century, with growing impacts on mortality, disease burden, environmental sustainability and economic welfare. The costs of inaction continue to rise, particularly for vulnerable populations and countries with fewer resources to adapt. Governments need evidence on which climate-health interventions provide the greatest health, environmental and economic returns to guide policy and investment decisions. The report demonstrates that climate-health action is not only essential for protecting health, but also represents a major opportunity to strengthen economies, reduce emissions and advance equity. Ahead of COP31- the UN Climate Change Conference in Antalya, Türkiye, the new report from WHO examines how climate action can deliver significant health and economic gains, and save lives. The Global benefits and costs of prioritized actions on climate change and health presents economic gains from scaling up a package of climate-health mitigation and adaptation actions. It is the first global quantitative assessment of six priority climate-health actions, including heat-health warning systems; safely managed drinking-water; basic sanitation; hand hygiene; cleaner household energy sources; and fiscal policies to efficiently price fossil fuels.
