Article Icon 1Cougars Come Up Short in Championship

The Houston Cougars came within three points of securing their first national championship in the title game against the Florida Gators on Monday night but lost in the final moments 65-63.

The Cougars seemed to have the game in hand with a 12-point lead early in the second half before the Gators rallied on both sides of the court, tying the score at 48 with just under eight minutes remaining.

The contest remained close to the end, but Houston failed to get a three-point shot off with time running out.

The win made Florida coach Todd Golden, 39, the youngest coach to win a championship in the modern college basketball era. It marks the third national championship for the Gators.

Heavy rains and tornados ripped through East Texas over the weekend, causing extensive damage, especially in Smith and Wood counties. On Friday night, a dam serving Lindale's Lake Lorraine washed out, flooding streets and buildings.

After the home he built with his own hands was submerged by floodwaters in Hawkins on Friday, Daniel Bancroft returned Saturday to wade through the wreckage. "We got married, engaged out here... This home has memories," Bancroft said.

On Saturday in Pittsburg, flash floods swept a herd of cows into a culvert and carried them beneath a bridge. All of them made it back to dry land safely.

Around 100,000 gallons of rainwater mixed with sewage overflowed from a Nacogdoches water treatment plant into a nearby creek. City officials stated that the contamination threat is minimal.
